Today is the six-year anniversary of the death of Derrick Thomas. He was and will probably always be my favorite player from the Kansas City Chiefs. He was an outside linebacker known for his speed and agility. He was one of the most feared pass rushers of the 1990's. Derrick won the Butkus Award and was a concensus All-America selection in 1988 while playing for the University of Alabama. The Chiefs drafted him with the fourth overall selection in the 1989 NFL draft. He wore #58 for the Chiefs and quickly became a force for the K.C. defense. He racked up 10 sacks in his rookie season. He won the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year that season. In his second season, he led the NFL in sacks with 20. On Veteran's Day in 1990, Thomas set an NFL record by racking up 7 sacks against the Seattle Seahawks. He helped lead the Chiefs to the playoffs that season. He won the team MVP award in 1991. He led the Chiefs in sacks in his first four seasons. He helped the Chiefs win the AFC West title in 1993. The team made it to the AFC Championship game that season. He also won the NFL Man of the Year award that season. In 1994, he won his second team MVP award as the Chiefs made the playoffs once again. Derrick helped K.C. win the AFC West crown again in 1995. The Chiefs led the NFL in scoring defense that year and finished with a 13-3 record. Thomas notched his eighth consecutive Pro Bowl berth in 1996 but the Chiefs failed to make the playoffs. K.C. bounced back in 1997 by finishing on top of the AFC West. Thomas recorded sack number 100 that season and again made the Pro Bowl. Number 100 came against John Elway and the Denver Broncos. The Chiefs missed the playoffs in 1998 but Derrick had one of the best games of his career in the first game of the season against the Raiders. He sacked Jeff George 6 times in that game. Thomas' final season came in 1999. He led the Chiefs in sacks for the seventh time in his career. Derrick Thomas finished his career with 126.5 sacks, 45 forced fumbles, 19 fumble recoveries, 1 interception, 728 tackles, 4 touchdowns and 3 safeties. Derrick also racked up 9 Pro Bowl appearances. Rest in peace #58.
